Non-human primates are indispensable animal models for biomedical research. This is due to the similarity in behavior, physiology and functions of organs. In addition, their immune systems are genetically more similar to humans than other animal models, such as rodents, rabbits, dogs. The main species of non-humanoid primates used in preclinical studies can be divided into New World species, such as common igrunki (Callithrix jacchus) and Old World species such as long-tailed or Javanese macaques (Macaca fascicularis) and rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta).
Our review is devoted to the primates of the New World used in preclinical studies, namely the common igrunka and the formation of diets and their feeding regime in a research laboratory. Proper feeding and maintenance of primates used in research are of great importance for animal welfare, the collection of reliable research data, for the health and safety of animal care personnel, growth, reproduction and the health of the animals themselves.
In order to meet the nutritional needs of common needles kept in a research laboratory, highly qualified personnel are needed who will be able to balance the diet for a particular species, taking into account their physiological and behavioral characteristics, physical activity and features of keeping in the laboratory in the absence of natural light.
The purpose of this review is to identify the feeding characteristics of common igruns in the wild, to get acquainted with the nutritional needs of this primate species, with existing methods of forming diets, to determine ways to provide products to stimulate natural behavior in a research laboratory and to control the sufficiency of feeding.
