About the Journal

The Journal Laboratornye Zhivotnye dlya nauchnych issledovanii (Laboratory Animals for Science). NPO "Home of Pharmacy"

The theoretical and practical Journal publishes reviews, original articles and short reports in Russian or English, as well as letters to the editorial board with authors’ answers and advertising articles and materials. The editorial board accept materials of completed researches which may improve the quality of the experimental work, in general, and laboratory animals’ welfare, in particular.

The Journal was founded in 2018 in St. Petersburg. The Journal is published at least 4 times a year. The Journal publishes articles in Russian and English. You can place the advertisement of your organization or products in this Journal. The editorial board does not bear any responsibility for the advertising content. In case of reprinting, the reference to the Journal is obligatory. Editorial opinion may not coincide with the views of the authors.

The aim of the Journal «Laboratory Animals for Science» is to improve the quality of experimental research by spreading up-to-date knowledge about laboratory animals and their use for scientific purposes.

The Journal publishes papers aimed at obtaining information about laboratory animals, their welfare, behaviour, anatomy, physiology and biochemistry under normal conditions, under pathological conditions and in experiment.

The editors aim to publish original researches and reviews on laboratory animals at the molecule, cell, organ and organism levels. The studies considering conditions of maintenance of laboratory animals from the viewpoint of their welfare, stress- and pain-reduction in experiment as well as replacement of animal models by alternative methods are of a particular interest. The journal considers aspects related to development and validation of new experimental models and use of new animal species as laboratory ones in experimental work on the pharmacology and toxicology of drugs and medical products.

The Journal would like to emphasize the integrative nature of the biological experiment in which species, line of breeding, welfare and quality of animals have a direct impact on the quality and value of data obtained in the experiment.

Bioethical aspects (3Rs principles)

The Journal publishes literary reviews and original papers considering the issues related to the use of alternative models (without using vertebrate animals), optimization of the sample size of laboratory animals and standardization of experimental models.

Breeding and Genetics

The issues related to breeding of laboratory animals, genetic purity of experimental animals, validation of the genome of laboratory animals, generating new breeding lines of animals etc. are considered.
Anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and pathology
Papers on anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and pathology of laboratory animals, as well as papers in which they are compared with humans, other species or breeding lines of laboratory animals are accepted for consideration. Papers can be devoted both to individual observations and the systemic ones, and on the whole must give to the reader a certain idea of the animals used in the experiment.

Keeping, environment and nutrition

This section contains papers on the environmental conditions the laboratory animals are in contact with: temperature, humidity, illumination intensity, pressure, air flow velocity, materials the animal cage is made of, environmental enrichment devices, litter materials used, fodder, etc. We consider papers on the impact on animal welfare and progress of research of such factors as: method of forming a group of animals, the number of animals in a group, the duration of adaptation etc. Diet formulation for animals with due account for sex, age, research objectives, effects of some or other dietary additives on the health of animals.

Anaesthesia, analgesia, terminal procedures, humane «endpoints of the experiment»

The section is devoted to issues of anaesthesia, analgesia, terminal procedures and humane «endpoints of the experiment» from the viewpoint of minimization of suffering of animals and provision of proper veterinary care in the process of both maintenance and getting a livestock and during the experiment.

Experimental models and design

We publish original papers describing researches involving animals in the field of toxicology and experimental pharmacology, as well as papers proving and justifying advisability of new methodological approaches to the modelling of various pathological states and describing the use of new experimental models. The validity of use of one or another approach must be discussed from the viewpoint of the 3Rs principles. We accept for publication review articles which analyse current trends in the modelling of various pathologies. In the subheading «design» we publish papers which justify new approaches to experiment planning in observance of the principles of 3Rs. In this sub-section we also publish papers proving rationality of application of some or other treatment schemes, disinfection, etc.

Regulatory legal regulation

In this section we publish papers on issues of regulatory and legal regulation of use of laboratory animals for experimental purposes, issues of regulation of preclinical studies, regulation of sanitary and epidemiological maintenance conditions of animals.

Education

This section accepts for consideration papers related to technology of manipulations in animals, pre- and post-operation care, preparation, getting animals used to manipulations, the proper technique of manipulation: introduction, operative intervention, data registration, etc. This section is supposed to help young researchers learn how to manipulate with animals humanely without causing them any harm or suffering as well as be also able to assess the severity of manipulation for animal and to prevent suffering and pain in animals at the appropriate times.
In this section the information on events (congresses, conferences, conventions, exhibitions), directly or indirectly related to laboratory animals and pre-clinical studies, is also placed.

Apart from the required compliance of the article with the subject matter of the Journal, it is obligatory for authors to guarantee that the manuscript submitted to the editors for publication (in the original or translated into other languages) has not previously been published and is not under consideration in other publishing houses.
