In the present review, we discuss the problem of hypersensitivity to laboratory animal allergens, which affects both animal caretakers and research personnel. Biological characteristics of the main allergens released by laboratory rodents are presented, as well as the mechanisms and clinical manifestations of hypersensivity reactions to laboratory animals. In addition, we consider main approaches aiming prevention of occupational allergy. The key measures to minimize predisposing factors are identified, such as the monitoring of the working space parameters, administrative measures, application of the principles of proper animal care, and the use of personal protective equipment, as well as timely detection and diagnosis of the disease. The necessity of in-depth study of the issue, feasibility assessment and legislative support is pointed out.
